The Aroma of Christ

“But thanks be to God, who in Christ always leads us in triumphal procession, and through us spreads in every place the fragrance that comes from knowing him. For we are the aroma of Christ….” (2 Corinthians 2:14-15)

I woke up this morning and saw that it had rained during the night. It is a bit chilly, the temperature in the low 40s. My wife and I bundle up and walk to the nature trail near our home and down to the hollow. We see the nearby hilltops dusted with fresh snow, but the valley below is spring-alive with new green leaves. We walk along the narrow path through the woods, mindfully noticing wild flowers of different colors and shapes, then suddenly the sweet smell of sage whips into my nose, into my brain; it was ever so fleeting yet so unmistakable. These chance encounters!

Paul says we are the aroma of Christ. Imagine people around you, including the chance passers-by, suddenly realizing they are in the presence of something sweet and lovely and refreshing, like grace, like loving kindness. Paul says that fragrance comes from our heart “knowing” the heart of Christ; not through preachy words but through being who and whose we are.

The Easter Celebration was indeed wonderful. The music was majestic and uplifting, and the sanctuary was Easterly bright and fragrant with the white banners and Easter lilies. Now we carry that fragrance and joy within us into our daily lives. May the Spirit of risen Christ live in you and make you alive each and every moment.
