September

September is a good time to think about community, our church family, which is a gift from God.

Summer has been strangely busy, what with efforts to get away (vacation—to vacate?) from the scorching heat or not, from the daily routines or not, or efforts to reconnect with relatives and friends and places long un-connected, un-communed. Now, students of all ages are going back to school. Nature is summoning up all her mysterious energy toward autumn harvest. At your church home, it is the start of the new program year. Sunday School, chancel choir and spiritual formation small groups are resuming. Yes, this community is a gift from God for our maturing, the Body of Christ “where we find strangers who are not strangers to help and to heal, to listen to the truth and to tell it” (Frederick Buechner).

♥ September 8th is Rally Sunday. There will be a continental breakfast at 9:30. The Sunday School will resume. Come and find out about new opportunities for growth, service and witness. Tell your neighbors and friends about our church.

♥ September is Ecumenical Celebration of Creation Month. Our worship services will reflect this theme. We’ll join our sisters and brothers in Christ all over the glove in celebrating and thinking about faithful stewardship of God’s Creation.

♥ On Saturday, September 28th, from 10 am to noon, we’ll have our second Vital Congregation meeting to put our hearts and minds together to grow our church. Our District Superintendent Rev. Sione Tukutau will be with us to render his insight and support. Please make this one of your priorities.

♥ On Friday, September 27th, 7 pm, we will host the 11th Celebration of Faith gathering. This annual gathering of six down churches—two LDS stakes, Cathedral of the Madeleine (Roman Catholic), Saint Marks Episcopal Cathedral, First Presbyterian Church and First UMC—began in 2002 to affirm each other and celebrate our common faith and vision in response to the 9/11 tragedy. We expect our sanctuary to be full. Tell your friends about this uniquely Salt Lake event.

♥ I am particularly excited about introducing a new spiritual formation small resource called Companions in Christ. Please read about it and other spiritual formation opportunities on page ? of this issue of Crosswinds.

Finally, I expend my heartfelt welcome to our newest members who joined FUMC membership
on August 18th: Lacy Mateo, Chris Schnell and Neil Uemura. I, with all the members and friends of FUMC family, pledge to do all we can to love you and support you in your faith journey.
