First United Methodist Church is one of the eight founding churches of Family Promise – Salt Lake, providing safe lodging and meals to homeless families at no cost to the families. We host the families within our walls 3-4 times a year for 1-2 weeks at a time. Members help to provide meals, support and stay overnight.
Families with children constitute the fastest growing segment of the homeless population nationwide. According to The National Alliance to End Homelessness over 100,000 families are homeless on any given night. Every year, more than 600,000 families with 1.5 million children experience homelessness. These parents and children comprise over 50% of the homeless population.
Family Promise – Salt Lake is an interfaith alliance that provides homeless families shelter, food and basic needs as they work with case management to achieve lasting self-sufficiency. Families sleep overnight in church buildings and utilize a wide array of support services. Once families move into their own housing, staff continues to offer supportive services for up to two years.
Family Promise works to keep families together and to offer homelike and loving shelter and support while working to maintain human dignity during each person’s experience of homelessness, as families work to transition to stable housing and improve their quality of life.
