A Wesleyan Sermon Recital Series is the dream and creation of Scott R. Mills, Principal Organist at First United Methodist Church (FUMC).
When discussions began about the renovation of the organ at FUMC, Scott began developing the idea for an organ recital series. Scott was at one time a guest organist at Temple Square for six months and from this experience he began to put together a plan for the recital series. With the Cathedral of the Madeleine hosting the Eccles Organ Festival each fall, Scott wanted to have an organ recital series that would be unique for the community and still have a connection with the Methodist Church. He wanted to include organists from the community and still make it ecumenical in nature. We also include other types of music including vocal soloists and ensemble groups.
Participants have included organists Scott R. Mills, Ken Udy, George Henry, Janet Griffin, Seth Bott, Lori Serr, Linda Margetts, Rulon Christiansen, Clay Christiansen, Don Cook, Heidi Alley, Larry Blackburn, Teresa Clawson, Harry Cross, Eila Cagle, Lora Kelly, Barbara Adler, Lynn Carson, Dennis McCracken, Ian Christensen, Florence Hawkinson, Gladys Farmer, Parker Ludwig, Ron Richardson, Ruth Eldredge, Alex Oldroyd, Mike Carson and J. Scott Rowley.
Also the Urdu Community Choir, Otter Creek Folk Duo, Kathi Needham-Dilworth soprano, Ann Jefferds soprano, and Phyllis Baker cello and the Wesley Bell Ringers.
Readings have come from community leaders including, Scott Anderson, Dr. Jerold Ottley, Dr. Robert Cundick, Frank Asper, Jr., Walter Rudolph, Rev. Steve Anderson and Rev. Caryl Marsh and many others.
